Find my Friends
Dec 2011:
Find my Friends - always Free
Description:
Find My Friends allows you to easily locate your friends and family from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Install this free app on your iOS 5 device and sign in with the Apple ID you use with iCloud. Adding a friend is easy – just send a request to see their location. Once your friend accepts using the Find My Friends app, you will then be able to see that friend’s location on a list or on a map.
You can also choose to share your location for a limited period of time with a group of friends.
Use Find My Friends to keep track of your traveling companions when you’re on vacation. Or to see if the kids are home from school.
****Note: This might seem a strange app to recommend for schools, however I met someone today who had a rather clever idea. She works at a school where they do travel training with their students, and was very excited about the potential uses of this app. So great App for you, but also has great potential if you start thinking 'outside the box' . Another person told me how she rings her daughter constantly as she makes a 7hr drive from where she lives to her house, she can now just see on her device where her daughter is rather than ring her while she's driving.

Readable
Dec 2011:
Readable – $0.99
Description:
Eyes of the world on new app
A new computer application developed by a Wollongong company which uses eye contact to scroll pages is doing big business in 88 countries around the world.
Readable is the latest software produced by apps development studio Joindup, which is operated by IT gurus Alan Beadnell and Nicholas Conroy.
CEO Mr Beadnell said since the launch of Readable on iTunes in June, thousands of copies had been sold.
Readable enables a user to open any web page, feed or book and scroll the pages using Joindup’s new face detection technology.
‘‘The face detection looks for two eyes, a nose and a mouth and this enables the scrolling to work. As soon as the person’s eyes drop, the screen pauses,’’ Mr Beadnell said.
He used the scenario of reading at a cafe while eating lunch; each time the person looked away to cut their food, the screen continued scrolling and the reader was forced to backtrack to regain their place.
‘‘What happens with Readable is, when you look down to cut your food, it loses your face so it pauses. It waits to see your face again and then continues.’’
Readable helps people making speeches or other presentations to keep their place. It also enables operators to share information with fellow users.
‘‘Normally, if you wanted to send a link to somebody, you would have to copy and paste the piece to which you want to draw attention. With Readable, it sends the position you are looking at,’’ Mr Beadnell said.
He said the app, which worked for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, overcame problems of ‘‘position fatigue’’, developed by readers who had to constantly tap, flick and tilt their devices to read a screen.
He said the response to the app so far had been ‘‘phenomenal’’.
‘‘We have had feedback from many countries... It’s been a great success, which is really great for a Wollongong company.’

Speech with Milo Interactive Storybook
Sept 2011: Speech with Milo: Interactive Storybook – ($0.99)
Description
Speech with Milo is focused on developing language skills in children. Created by the licensed Speech-Language Pathologist that brought you five other language apps, to build storytelling and narrative skills. The interactive story book allows children to build skills by telling the story on their own. You have the option of reading and listening to the words that we provide, or you may create your own story. You can turn off the narration and words to create your own story with no distractions.
This is an original story with characters, plot, events, and a linear story progression selected carefully in order to develop and informally assess speech and language skills. It is intentionally simple so that the focus of the book is on developing language skills. This application is made for children, approximately ages 2-10, in order to build a variety of language skills.

Book Creator for iPad
Sept 2011: Book Creator for iPad – $7.49
Description:
Lots of eBook creating apps appearing in iTunes Store which is wonderful. I like this one as it has a very simple, clean interface and exports straight to iBooks. A nice support website here
http://www.redjumper.net/bookcreator/
Be aware though the files are 'fixed layout' epub files, which iBooks handles differently to 'flowable' epub files. iBooks for these creations doesn't allow the font settings to be changed (you set the font and size when creating the book), or highlighting and notes. You can still tap a word and access dictionary meanings.

VisTimer
Sept 2011: VisTimer – Always Free
I'm often asked for visual timers and there are quite a few out there, however they are always 'not quite right' - I think I've finally found 'the one'. It is very similar to the physical timers often used in our Learning Centres. I'll give you the link to both the free version and the paid version – be aware the free version has a limit of 5min and an advertisement banner. The purchased version has no advertisement and you can set the timer for 24hrs. Information about the App...
Description:
Visual thinkers, especially when they are children, have difficulty conceptualising time. Being able to see the changing pie chart as time passes makes it easier to understand time and duration. It is easy to explain to a child that when the circle is completely gone, an activity is finished or a task must be completed. There is an Early Warning preference setting to indicate the timer is approaching completion. This provides a gentle reminder to prepare and set expectations. Even the colour of the pie chart can be customised to a calming favourite colour. Sometimes allowing a child to participate in selecting these preferences creates a sense of ownership and commitment. The VisTimer can also operate in Lock Mode, where all settings are locked after the timer is started. This imparts it with a higher sense of authority and detaches its consequences from you.

Autism Apps
Sept 2011: Autism Apps – Always Free
Autism Apps was created as a resource for anyone looking for apps for people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome or other special need. Many people are discovering the many uses that iPads, iPhones and iPod touches can have as tools and resources for people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome or other disability. Though there are a multitude of apps in the app store that many people diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome or another special need use and enjoy, they can be difficult to find.
Autism Apps links to extensive reviews of the apps written by parents, specialists, and other users usually from first-hand experience. Autism Apps also has links to video demonstrations or video reviews of the apps when they are available."

Proloquo2Go
June 2011: Proloqu2Go & Apple (Try out before you buy)
Besides Apple Stores, you can now try P2G on an iPad at your local Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB HiFi. Please call ahead to see if they have display iPads with P2G. Sometimes staff are unaware of P2G, so you may need to speak to the manager. My understanding is that there will be a staff member looking after the Apple products who has had training on P2G.
Please make parents aware of this as well, it is an opportunity to not only have someone show you P2G but also an opportunity for the potential user to see if they can physically swipe and tap on the screen of the iPad.
As always I'm happy to visit your school and show you P2G, give your student an opportunity to use P2G and if you decide to go ahead and purchase I'll provide training.
One more thing... because P2G is a communication solution for people who cannot speak, think about adults you may know who have lost their ability to speak thru a stroke etc. Another example is an intensive care unit who are considering using an iPad with P2G to enable patients who have tubes inserted after surgery who now cannot communicate with the intensive care staff

ABA
April 2011: ABA Free
The acronym ABA stands for “Applied Behavioural Analysis”. It is the science of behaviour. Behaviour is anything we say or do, from asking for juice, or a child telling their parent they hear an airplane, to playing on the beach. In simple terms it involves breaking down tasks into small achievable steps, each step building on the previous one. Data is taken to guide teaching and rewards called ‘reinforcers’ are given for correct responses.
Children with learning disabilities such as speech or language delays, hearing loss, ADD/ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Autism, Down Syndrome, Dyspraxia or PDD learn much less from their natural environment. They are very much capable of learning but they require a more structured environment right from the start. The point of ABA is to teach the prerequisites to make it possible for a child with disabilities to learn more naturally where they are not “picking up” information or skills such as social, motor, verbal behaviours or reasoning skills on their own.
